Figure out in advance how to break up the time to make it more enjoyable for your child. In the car, what fun place can you stop at midway for a nice long stretch break—grab a bite to eat, go to the toilet, and run around? If it’s a plane ride, what can you do before or after to let her burn off energy? Can you break the trip into a few segments with stops along the way to stay for a night?

As for packing, when I worked as a nanny, I liked to pack two or three days in advance so that I didn’t feel rushed. I would pin a checklist to each suitcase so that I knew not only what I put in but what needed to come back! Take as little as possible to avoid carrying a lot of luggage. You can wash clothes if necessary in your hotel room or at Grandma’s house.

Pack a travel bag for each child. (See box.) Also pack a few surprises in your carry-on for when boredom with everything else sets in—a new book, a pack of cards for the four- or five-year-old. If flying, make sure you have all medications and other essentials in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost.

I hope you are now inspired to get your little ones out on a regular basis—to enjoy the enrichment activities your community offers, as well as to venture farther on trips near and far. In the next chapter, I offer my Social SOS. I’ll help you get over the bumps that may occur along the way—restaurant scenes, grocery store battles, and car seat challenges, to name but a few.
